Ancipital is a fast paced shooter with a distinctly oddball twist. You control a bipedal yak like creature that fires bananas at enemies while bouncing between floors walls and ceilings. The goal is to clear each screen by blasting foes until the environment shifts allowing you to advance to the next section. Every level swaps out the visuals and projectiles from skulls to cigarette butts changing the aesthetic without altering the core action. This 1984 Commodore release leans hard into its quirky identity. Jeff Minter’s signature absurdity shines through in the shifting themes and bizarre enemy designs. The map corner gives a hint of progression but the real draw is the relentless pace and unexpected art direction. A cult classic for those who enjoy 80s retro games with a side of surrealism.
