About Foolish Mortals

Foolish Mortals is an adventure-puzzle game developed by Inklingwood Studios. Released in November 2025 for PC and Mac, it drops you into 1933 Devil’s Rock, a Louisiana island haunted by voodoo, spirits, and an evil Phantom. As Murphy McCallan, you explore Bellemore Manor, solve cryptic puzzles, and figure out a decades-old mystery. The game blends classic point-and-click mechanics with eerie atmosphere and eccentric characters, all driven by Murphy’s obsession with a treasure that’s more dangerous than he imagined. It’s a spooky, story-driven escape into a world where the past isn’t buried and the living aren’t safe.

Gameplay

You navigate Devil’s Rock by clicking to move and interact, with a dynamic inventory for puzzle-solving. Each location teems with clues, ghostly riddles, hidden objects, and environmental puzzles that tie to Murphy’s quest. The evil Phantom actively hunts you, forcing you to avoid detection while uncovering secrets. Sessions usually mix exploration and deduction, like piecing together diary entries to unlock manor doors. Controls are intuitive, with right-click context menus and drag-and-drop inventory use. The game’s pacing shifts between tense chase sequences and methodical investigation, all set to a 1930s jazz and eerie sound effects.

What Players Think

Foolish Mortals holds a 4.6/5 PlayPile rating, with 88% positive reviews. Players average 13 hours to complete it, and 62% finish the story. Community moods highlight "atmospheric" (81%) and "challenging" (72%), though 18% called puzzles "frustratingly obtuse." Critics praised "haunting visuals" and "rich storytelling," while 15% cited clunky UI. With 50+ achievements, 87% of owners collect at least half. At $29.99, 76% of players say it’s worth the price, though 12% wanted more post-game content.

PlayPile's Take

This game works best for point-and-click purists who love spooky settings and clever puzzles. The $29.99 price matches its 12-hour campaign and 50+ achievements, but some sections drag. The Phantom’s relentless pursuit adds tension, but not all puzzles are intuitive. It’s not a masterpiece, but the story and atmosphere justify a playthrough. Skip if you prefer fast action or linear puzzles.

Storyline

DEVIL'S ROCK An island off the coast of Louisiana 1933 “Ever since I heard of the treasure inside Bellemore Manor I've been obsessed by it. People said the house was still haunted by the ghosts of the wedding that disappeared there decades ago, but if the ghosts knew where the treasure was hidden, I just had to ask them. But there's more to the treasure than I could have ever expected, and now I've awakened a household of spirits who don't mind that they're dead, and an evil phantom determined to find the treasure before I do. Fixing the situation won't just mean getting to the treasure first, but also figuring out what happened on the island all those years ago. But I have a feeling that in order to do that, I'll have to die too.” – The Diary of Murphy McCallan
