About Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX

Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX is a 2D action platformer developed by Inti Creates and released in late September 2019. You play as Copen, an armored vigilante known as the Luminous Avenger iX who roams a dystopian future where non-powered humans face execution. This single-player title launched across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. The game stands out by blending tight shooting mechanics with classic side-scrolling movement while maintaining a distinct narrative tone. It arrived on the market as a standalone spinoff from the larger Azure Striker Gunvolt series, focusing entirely on one character's mission to protect the oppressed population known as Minos.

Gameplay

You control Copen through linear stages filled with enemies and obstacles using standard directional inputs and button presses for movement. Your main tool is the Armored Armor, a versatile suit that lets you dash, wall jump, and fire various weapons from your gun arm. The core loop involves shooting down waves of foes while collecting energy orbs to fill up your special meter. You can switch between different weapon types mid-combat to handle specific enemy formations or environmental hazards. A companion drone named Lola assists by providing cover fire or healing you when needed. Sessions typically last around an hour per stage as you hunt for hidden collectibles and perfect your run times without taking damage.

What Players Think

Players and critics have responded strongly to this title with Metacritic and IGDB both awarding it an 81 out of 100 score based on seven user ratings on that platform. The community keeps the game active despite its single-player focus, with an average playtime hovering around twelve hours for a standard run. Achievement data shows only 45.1% of players have unlocked at least one trophy, while the rarest feat "Ability Collector" remains elusive for most at just a 9 percent unlock rate. Steam pricing sits at a low of $7.49, which seems to drive sales volume compared to full price. Review sentiment leans heavily toward appreciation for the tight controls and challenging boss fights rather than any perceived flaws in execution or design.

PlayPile's Take

This game is a solid choice if you want a fast-paced shooter without the pressure of multiplayer competition. The $7.49 price point on Steam makes it an easy buy even if you only plan to clear a few stages. You will likely struggle with the "Ability Collector" achievement since it demands finding every item in the game, which might deter casual players looking for a quick completion. The 81 score reflects consistent quality but also indicates room for improvement in pacing during later levels. Pick this up if you enjoy precise movement mechanics and do not mind grinding for hidden collectibles to unlock all 15 trophies available.

Storyline

In the near future, in a nation unknown... Humanity has entered a new age where the majority are now “Adepts” — people who possess supernatural powers known as “Septimas”. Humans who do not have Septimas, known as “Minos”, are being hunted and executed by the “Institute for the Promotion of Human Evolution ‘Sumeragi’”. Among these Minos, whose everyday lives have turned into a living nightmare, there was an urban legend spoken of only in hushed tones: tales of the “Luminous Avenger iX”. It was a rumor of a warrior clad in pure white armor, accompanied by the Muse of Hope, Lola, who fought for the sake of all Minos — This story begins when the Luminous Avenger iX, or “Copen”, encounters a lone girl.
