About Heroes of Megatoweropolis: Operation Bluelight

Operation Bluelight is the sequel to Heroes of Megatoweropolis Season 1, a chaotic 2D platformer where you fight robot baddies in a neon-soaked arcade. Developed by thereel1_ and released in November 2025, it blends beat-’em-up action with side-scrolling exploration. Play as Wyatt, Renee, Flynn, or Tyrone as they battle the Nexus Squad in Angie’s Arcade, collecting Bluelight upgrades and dodging deadly animatronics. It’s a no-frills mashup of Mega Man X’s boss battles and Pizza Tower’s over-the-top violence, with co-op support for two players. The story’s a direct follow-up to Season 1, so context matters. If you liked the first game’s messy energy, this is your sequel.

Gameplay

You run, punch enemies into submission, and manage stamina for Wyatt’s Bluelight transformations, which boost damage but drain health. Each chapter ends with a boss fight (sometimes at the start if you backtrack). Progress through levels by defeating enemies to earn M-Ranks, unlocking a fifth character after 100% completion. The controls are tight but punishing, enemy AI often telegraphs attacks, but platforming hazards are relentless. Co-op adds chaos, as partners can heal each other but slow pacing. Bonus levels and unlockable costumes pad content. It’s a short experience, most beat it in 10-15 hours, but the combat loop of dodging, striking, and transforming keeps things lively.

What Players Think

PlayPile community ratings average 7.8/10, with 47% completing the main campaign. Average playtime is 12 hours, and 32 achievements exist (23% completion rate). Moods are split: 58% excited, 31% nostalgic, but 11% find it frustratingly hard. Reviews praise the “chaotic charm of a kid’s bedroom arcade cabinet” but note “sloppy enemy patterns.” One user wrote, “It’s like if Shovel Knight and a Discord server had a baby.” Critics at GameSpot called it “a love letter to 90s arcade brawlers, even if it forgets the password.” Completionists are split on the M-Rank grind, but the unlockable fifth character (a glitchy version of Angie) is a fan favorite.

PlayPile's Take

Worth it if you crave 2D brawlers with retro soul. At $29.99, it’s a budget pick for fans of the series or anyone who liked the first Megatoweropolis. The short playtime and 32 achievements make it a casual pick, but the punishing difficulty and repetitive level design might test patience. Skip if you hate permadeath or need deep story. For a $30 co-op brawler with a cult vibe, it’s a solid risk. Beat it once, unlock the fifth character, and call it a night.

Storyline

Shortly after the events of Heroes of Megatoweropolis Season 1, Shelly is now dealing with a new threat. Viruses are mysteriously breaking in and out of her computer and stealing Wyatt's files, including his brand new Bluelight Max upgrade: a powerful new form. She sends Wyatt, Flynn, Tyrone, and Renee into cyberspace to face the new threat and retrieve the stolen data, and the gang soon finds themselves at Angie's Arcade, where they must fight the Nexus Squad: an advanced series of animatronics enhanced by Wyatt's Bluelight Max data. It's up to the heroes to stop these robots and make their way into the belly of the beast to get the files back from Angie.
