Punch Ball Mario Bros. throws a new twist on side-scrolling action with its co-op focus and goofy combat. Two players take control of squatty underdogs armed with bounce-and-punch combos, plus those titular Punch Balls that let them stagger foes before finishing them off. The stages are tight and frantic, favoring quick reflexes over clever level design. While the visuals are simple, the real hook is the teamwork angle, partners need to chain moves and cover each other’s flanks to survive waves of bugs and goons. This oddball Japan-only title from 1984 stands out as a rare licensed Mario sidestep. Developer Hudson Soft’s take on the characters here feels more like a local action game than a direct sequel to the arcade originals. The story about stone-age plumbers clashing with modern threats feels even more absurd in hindsight, but the co-op gameplay remains solid for retro fans. With a cult following built around its mystery and co-op charm, it’s a niche but playable piece of early Mario history. The Japan-only systems make it a digital hunt, but emulated ports keep it kicking.
While humanity has evolved throughout the ages, mastering fire and developing advanced technology, some people such as Mario and Luigi are primitive people who do not know of modern society and must use "stone balls" and their jumping abilities to defend themselves from outsiders.
