About

1000-nen Oukoku is a 1986 visual novel from developer Log that tasks players with guiding protagonist Shou through a prophecy-driven mission. Set in a world where Nostradamus predicts humanity's end by 1999, you follow Shou as he transitions from ordinary schoolboy to someone burdened with uncovering Atlantis and halting the apocalypse. The game blends straightforward adventure mechanics with narrative choices, asking you to navigate relationships, historical mysteries, and a looming deadline. Its text-heavy approach focuses on dialogue and decision points rather than complex puzzles. The story stands out for its ambitious scope and earnest tone, balancing youthful romance with apocalyptic stakes. While the PC-8800 Series platform limits graphical flair, the narrative's blend of religious prophecy, ancient civilizations, and youth-driven responsibility feels surprisingly earnest for its time. With a 7.2/10 average on Mobygames, it’s remembered more for its thematic ambition than execution. Core mechanics prioritize branching paths but avoid heavy complexity, making it a concise example of early visual novel storytelling with a specific era's flavor intact.

However, a series of events changes his life forever, as he is entrusted with the task of saving humans by discovering the ancient continent of Atlantis.
