About 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim

Vanillaware released this sci-fi adventure strategy hybrid on November 28, 2019 for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. The story spans from World War II through 2104 as teenagers pilot massive robots called Sentinels against time-traveling kaiju known as Deimos. Humanity holds its ground in 1985 while the past and future crumble. You explore lush 2D side-scrolling worlds to uncover a complex mystery involving thirteen different characters. Once you gather enough intel, you switch to top-down tactical battles where you command these mechsuit warriors. It is a single-player experience that balances narrative depth with intense combat scenarios without requiring multiplayer skills.

Gameplay

Sessions split between two distinct modes. The adventure phase lets you walk through detailed environments as different characters, triggering dialogue and collecting clues about the Deimos threat. You toggle between three eras to piece together how time works in this world. Combat shifts to a grid-based strategy layer where you place Sentinels and issue orders like moving, attacking, or using special abilities. Each mech has unique weapons and defenses that require careful positioning against swarms of giant monsters. The game tracks your progress with a time-travel mechanic that changes available zones based on your choices. Controls feel responsive during both exploration and battle phases, letting you chain attacks or retreat when enemies overwhelm your formation.

What Players Think

Critics and players agree this title stands out with an 86 score on Metacritic and an IGDB rating of 87.9 from 116 users. Reviewers praise the art style as a major highlight, often noting the high detail in every frame. Community data shows an average playtime of roughly 35 hours for a standard run, with completion rates hovering near 92 percent for those who finish the story. Moods among players lean heavily toward impressed and confused, reflecting the complex non-linear narrative structure. Many users report spending extra time analyzing timeline connections after finishing the game. Sentiment analysis indicates that while the plot can be dense, the payoff feels worth the effort for strategy fans who enjoy puzzle-solving elements alongside their combat encounters.

PlayPile's Take

Buy this if you want a challenging story wrapped in tactical gameplay rather than a casual time killer. The price on digital stores usually sits around 60 dollars depending on sales, and it includes 51 achievements to chase after the main campaign. Vanillaware delivers a visually stunning experience that demands patience for its narrative but rewards strategic thinking in battle. It works best for players who enjoy piecing together lore across multiple timelines rather than those seeking simple action. Do not expect hand-holding during the mystery segments, as you must actively connect dots between characters and eras to understand the full picture.

Storyline

13 Sentinels’ story takes place across different eras, ranging from the final days of World War II to the distant future of 2104. Each era is besieged by the Deimos; mechanical kaiju who appear to be traveling through time to wipe out humanity in both the past and present. The only hope against them are massive robots called Sentinels which must be piloted by compatible teenagers from across the ages. Although the Sentinels can travel through time, there are a fixed number of time periods that they can access, and humanity now makes its final stand in 1985, the only era that has yet to be destroyed by the Deimos.
