About

7 Blades is a PlayStation 2 action-adventure game that blends third-person combat with exploration. Set in 17th century Japan, it follows Gokurakumaru, a rough-around-the-edges mercenary with a penchant for trouble. Players guide him through the fictional island of Dejima, a secluded area where tensions between Japanese authorities and foreign settlers simmer. The story draws from the 1990 film Zipang, mixing historical drama with over-the-top violence. Combat revolves around swordplay and firearms, with Gokurakumaru collecting weapons as he moves through the story. The game’s single-player focus lets players immerse themselves in the character’s chaotic journey. What stands out is the contrast between bloody action and the game’s quirky supporting cast. Togizo, the comic relief sidekick, balances the darker themes with lighthearted moments. The setting’s historical context adds depth, though the game’s dated visuals might not impress modern players. Released in 2000, it remains a niche title among Konami’s PlayStation 2 library.

Storyline

7 Blades is based on the 1990 film Zipang, directed by Japanese filmmaker Kaizo Hayashi.[1] The game takes place in mid-17th century Japan, during which the Tokugawa shogunate was gaining power. The game is set on the man-made island Dejima, which the Japanese government is using to house Western foreigners and were a Christian group is trying to separate from the rest of the country.[1][2] The main character is Gokurakumaru, a violent mercenary, and poor womanizer. He travels with his gun-wielding love interest (Oyuri) and sidekick (Togizo). The latter provides comic relief and holds the swords as Gokurakumaru collects them one by one.
