"My fear is that the situation won't improve fast enough, assuming it ever really does get better down the road. Despite its rough edges, the PC version has been successful for years now, and I have to imagine 7 Days to Die will also do well on consoles where competition among these types of sandbox survival experiences isn't so fierce. With that in mind, it's disappointing to see this sold on Xbox One and PS4 (with a retail release!) as if it is completed game. It clearly is not. After some substantial updates, I'd potentially want to give it another chance, but as is I wouldn't want to spend another minute with it."

About 7 Days to Die

This title dropped on July 25, 2024 after a long development cycle from The Fun Pimps. You find yourself in Navezgane, an open world where the undead roam freely. It blends first-person shooting with deep survival mechanics and RPG character growth. The game supports single player or cooperative play across PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Linux, and Mac. Players start with nothing but basic tools and must scavenge for resources to craft weapons and build shelters. You face the harsh environment while preparing for massive zombie waves that hit every seven days. It is a sandbox RPG that asks you to survive against overwhelming odds in a brutal setting.

Gameplay

Minutes feel like hours as you hunt for rocks and wood to make a stone axe or shovel. You gather plant fiber and bones to craft primitive tools while hunting animals for food. The core loop involves looting buildings, mining resources, and processing hide into leather. You build walls and traps to defend your base from nightly raids. Every seventh night brings a blood moon event where zombies become faster, stronger, and more aggressive in huge numbers. Combat mixes shooting, melee attacks, and tactical positioning. You can customize your character's skills to improve crafting or combat abilities. Multiplayer lets you team up with friends to tackle these challenges together or build massive fortifications. The game demands constant resource management and base expansion to stay alive.

What Players Think

The data shows this title struggles with critical reception. OpenCritic lists a score of 39 out of 100, where only 8.82 percent of critics recommend it. IGDB ratings sit at 52.7 from over 200 reviews. Players describe the vibe as creepy or dark based on small sample votes. ZTGD gave it a 65, noting the game does not demand commitment yet offers hours of co-op fun. Wccftech scored it 52 but praised the mix of role playing and survival mechanics. The community has unlocked 43 achievements with an average rate of just 38.1 percent. The rarest achievement "Alexander the great" appears for only 3.40 percent of players. Most users seem to stick around for the building and shooting aspects rather than completing every challenge.

PlayPile's Take

This game is for those who enjoy grinding for resources and managing base defenses over polished storytelling. It sells for $37.99 on Green Man Gaming, which is a fair price given the deep mechanics. The low critic scores suggest bugs or pacing issues might frustrate some players. You will spend more time crafting stone tools than fighting epic bosses in many sessions. The achievement data shows only hardcore fans chase the rarest rewards. If you want a solid zombie survival sandbox with multiplayer support, this works. It is not a perfect experience but offers enough depth for long play sessions if you ignore the poor critical ratings.

Storyline

You awaken with only a bare minimum of clothes on you, some canned food, glass of water and only your bare knuckles to defend yourself - time to get creative by scavenging for rocks, wood, plant fiber and bones, to make primitive tools (stone axe, stone shovel, shiv), basic weapons (wooden club, bow and arrows) and simple clothing made from plants and a sleeping bag. Venture the lands to find weapons, building resources and cooking tools, hunt and gather for food, process down hide into leather and start making a forge and start crafting metal objects. How this will play out in the long run is up to you - survive and even thrive, or perish at the infested claws and teeth of the undead, but also harsh environment can be your demise. Beware of the 7th night though, with the blood moon shining the undead will rise in masses and will be stronger, faster and more aggressive. Make haste, prepare for this event so you can survive, rebuild, expand and survive another week!
