8bit Wars is a punishing tower defense game set in a pixelated battle of 8-bit systems. You control Amstrad CPC models defending against waves of Spectrum, MSX, and C64 units. The goal is simple: place your machines in optimal positions to survive increasingly brutal assaults. Each enemy type has distinct behaviors and attack patterns requiring precise placement and resource management. With limited tools and escalating threats, mistakes come at a steep cost. The minimalist visuals and retro chiptune soundtrack amplify the tension without overwhelming the action. This title emerged from the CPCRETRODEV 2021 contest as a technical milestone, programmed entirely in BASIC using the 8BP library, making it the first game in the series to use mode 1 graphics. Developer 21bloques leans into the platform’s limitations to craft a brutally difficult experience, where even seasoned tower defense fans may find themselves restarting frequently. While the lack of modern conveniences like save progress or tutorials might frustrate some, it also captures the no-nonsense spirit of old-school coding challenges.
