A City Sleeps is a rhythm-driven shooter that flips the script on bullet-dodging action. Instead of hitting buttons to a beat you control, the music guides your movements through a chaotic cityscape. You steer a squad of characters whose abilities shift with the track’s tempo creating a flow where dodging attacks and pulling off maneuvers feels fluid not forced. The Idol System lets you swap between fighters mid-game each with distinct skills that change how you approach waves of enemies and environmental hazards. Developed by Harmonix the minds behind Rock Band and Amplitude the game leans into creative risk-taking. Its blend of music and reflexes earned praise for feeling fresh even among seasoned shmup fans. While the 2014 release date shows its age the tight controls and varied level design still hold up. Available on PC and Mac it’s a short but sharp experience that stands apart in the indie action scene.
