About A Story About My Uncle

Released in May 2014 by Gone North Games and published by Coffee Stain Studios, A Story About My Uncle is a non-violent adventure title built on the Unreal Engine. You play as a young boy searching for his missing uncle Fred within a mysterious underground realm. The game arrived on PC, Linux, and Mac systems as a single-player experience. It frames its narrative as a bedtime story told by a father to his daughter about his own childhood dreams of following his uncle into adventure. This setup creates a cozy yet curious atmosphere where exploration matters more than combat. Players navigate caverns filled with fantastical creatures and strange inventions without ever throwing a punch or firing a weapon.

Gameplay

Movement defines every minute you spend in this world. You rely entirely on a grappling hook to swing across gaps and climb vertical shafts inside massive caves. The controls feel responsive as you build momentum, allowing you to soar through tight spaces with genuine speed. There are no enemies to fight, so your focus stays on solving environmental puzzles and finding the right path forward. You collect clues that slowly reveal why Uncle Fred vanished and what lies deeper in the earth. Sessions involve careful timing of swings to reach distant platforms or avoid deadly drops. The game offers no checkpoints once you die, forcing you to master the physics before moving deeper into the level.

What Players Think

PlayPile data shows this title holds a solid 68.9 out of 100 score on IGDB based on 154 user ratings. Community members often cite an average playtime of roughly six hours, which aligns with its focused narrative length. Moods tracked within our system lean heavily toward "relaxed" and "curious," reflecting the lack of combat stress. While some critics noted the story feels a bit thin after a few hours, most players appreciate the clean movement mechanics. Reviews frequently mention the game's art style as a standout feature that keeps exploration engaging even when puzzles get repetitive. The price has fluctuated, with historical lows hitting $11.01 on Fanatical, making it an easy buy for fans of puzzle platformers.

PlayPile's Take

This game works best for players who want a short, atmospheric experience without the pressure of combat mechanics. You should pick this up if you enjoy physics-based movement and prefer story over action. The current price around $11.89 makes it accessible, especially since there are no extra costs to unlock content. Achievements are present but straightforward, tracking your completion of chapters rather than difficult skill checks. Do not expect a long campaign, as the mystery resolves quickly once you master the swinging mechanics. It is a concise adventure that rewards patience more than reflexes.

Storyline

The game is told as a bedtime story that a father is telling his daughter. When the father was young, his biggest dream was to follow his uncle Fred on his many adventures around the world. When the uncle one day disappears, the boy decides to go after him and ends up in another world. With help from his uncle’s inventions, he traverses beautiful underground caves, uncovers clues to his uncle’s whereabouts and meets fantastical creatures that help him on his journey. The further the boy goes into the caves, the deeper the mystery gets. Where had uncle Fred gone, and why had he left so suddenly?
