"Abyss of the Sacrifice is close to being something special, but its little irritants around presentation, puzzle consistency and design, and localisation mean that you'll need to be pretty far down the visual novel rabbit hole to want to play this. It wasn't long ago that Root Double was debuted on the Nintendo Switch, for example, and that game too takes place in an underground facility that the characters are trapped in. It might lack the puzzles, but it is incredibly well written, and as we see with Abyss of the Sacrifice, sometimes a VN is better off without the puzzles anyway."

About

Abyss of the Sacrifice follows five teenagers trapped in a collapsing subterranean city. Players guide their escape through a mix of dialogue choices and environmental puzzles while uncovering the group’s tangled relationships. The story unfolds via static artwork and branching scenarios that blend horror and drama. Puzzle solutions often tie directly to character fates creating tension between logic and empathy. The game’s strength lies in its slow-burn narrative and moral ambiguity. Character dynamics shift based on decisions with no clear right answers. While the 2010 release date and dated visuals might deter some the tight script and emotional stakes keep it compelling. Puzzle variety remains strong though occasional reliance on lateral thinking may frustrate. Best approached as a character-driven mystery where every action ripples through the story.
