Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Hillsfar is a fantasy RPG with real-time action sequences. You can create a character or import one from earlier AD&D games like Pool of Radiance. The city of Hillsfar holds multiple quests each tied to your character’s class, thief mage cleric or fighter. Navigation includes wandering streets chatting with NPCs and tackling tasks like lock-picking maze-solving and combat. Arena battles against minotaurs or orcs archery and horseback events all play out in real time requiring quick reflexes. The game’s strength lies in its mix of RPG progression and fast-paced mini-games. Real-time action was rare in 1989 RPGs making these segments stand out. With multiple quests and randomized elements each playthrough changes. Originally released on DOS C64 and Nintendo systems it built a cult following for its chaotic energy. While not every platform version is equal the core loop of exploration and sudden action keeps things engaging for fans of old-school fantasy games.
Every visit to Hillsfar is a different, exhilarating experience. Explore the city, meet its colorful denizens on the streets or in pubs and discover a quest. Your quest will keep you constantly on the move. Fight in the arena against raging minotaurs, ill-tempered orcs or insulted swordsmen. Enter different buildings and utilize your maze-running and lock-picking skills. Archery and equestrian events may also be part of your overall quest. Think and move fast - these mini-games happen in real-time. For adventure, there is no place like Hillsfar.
