Adventure II is a sequel to the 1979 Atari 2600 title that expands on its simple but tricky formula. Players guide a blocky character through mazes split into 47 rooms collecting items to retrieve the Enchanted Chalice and return it to the Golden Castle. The three dragons and bat from the original return but act more aggressively, blocking paths and snatching gear. Combat remains minimal, avoiding enemies is key, but the larger map and tighter controls make backtracking less frustrating. The story mirrors the first game’s quest, with the Evil Magician hiding the chalice in either the Fire or Ice Kingdom. Developed by Curt Vendel as a homebrew sequel, it launched on the Atari Flashback 2 in 2005 and has been included in every later Flashback console. It also appears in Atari Flashback Classics on Switch and Vol. 3 on PS4 and Xbox One. While not impressive, it improves on the original’s design with a bigger world and sharper enemy behavior. Longtime fans appreciate the nostalgic upgrade, and the retro pixel art remains charming. It’s a brief but tighter experience than the original, though still best suited for short play sessions.
For a second time, the Evil Magician has stolen the Enchanted Chalice from the Golden Castle, and it's up to the player to recover it using the power of Good Magic. The Magician has hidden the Chalice in either the Fire Kingdom or the Ice Kingdom, and has resurrected his three dragons, Yorgle, Grundle, and Rhindle, to hinder the player's journey. He has also created a Bat to steal items from the player once again.
