About Aeon Drive

Aeon Drive is a cyberpunk action platformer set in a neon-drenched alternate Barcelona. Developed by 2Awesome Studio and published by Critical Reflex, it released on September 30, 2021, across PC, consoles, and Linux/Mac. You play as Jack, a stranded space pilot with a sword, teleportation dagger, and time-manipulation abilities. The goal: retrieve Drive Cores to repair her ship and prevent the city’s collapse. The game blends fast platforming, combat, and environmental puzzles with a focus on time control. It’s a frenetic, visually sharp experience with co-op and competitive multiplayer modes. The story leans into sci-fi action tropes but adds a punchy, chaotic energy that keeps it engaging.

Gameplay

Aeon Drive revolves around platforming and combat with a time-bending twist. Jack can slow time to dodge hazards or rewind moments to backtrack. Combat uses a mix of sword slashes and dagger throws, with enemies often requiring precise timing. Each level drops Drive Cores scattered across vertical maps, demanding agility and weapon mastery. Multiplayer modes pit players against each other in Core-hunting duels or co-op challenges where time manipulation syncs between partners. The controls are responsive but can feel floaty at times, especially during tight platforming. Missions last 15, 30 minutes, with a mix of combat, puzzle-solving, and boss fights. The time mechanics add depth but occasionally lead to confusing checkpoint systems.

What Players Think

PlayPile users rate Aeon Drive 7.8/10, matching its 74/100 Metacritic score. 76% of players finish the story mode, averaging 5.2 hours. Community moods lean chaotic (58%) and adventurous (32%), with 10% calling it “frustrating.” Achievements are sparse but rewarding, with 80% of players hitting 100% completion. Reviewers praise the art style and time mechanics but cite repetitive enemy types and inconsistent difficulty spikes. One player wrote, “The time rewind makes platforming feel fresh, but the AI enemies can’t track worth a damn.” Another noted, “Co-op is a blast but needs more content.” Performance on older consoles is hit-or-miss, with 22% of PS4 players reporting frame drops.

PlayPile's Take

Aeon Drive is a niche pick for fans of zippy platformers with experimental mechanics. It shines in short sessions but lacks the polish for long-term appeal. At $19.99, it’s a low-risk purchase, especially for co-op lovers. The time manipulation and cyberpunk visuals are highlights, but repetitive combat and checkpoint issues hold it back. If you want a chaotic, fast-paced adventure with a decent multiplayer hook, it’s worth a try. For solo play, stick to story mode and avoid late-game frustration.
