Aero Fighters is a side scrolling shooter with arcade roots that lets you battle through stages in solo or co op. The game features 8 stages split into two loops with shifting environments depending on your character pick. Early levels draw from random regions while selecting Rabio or Lepus unlocks 4 rival nation stages. Beat those and you gain access to 4 additional challenges. The structure changes based on your progress with different pilots and teams unlocking alternate paths. What makes it stick is the layered progression system and hidden rewards. Completing the first loop triggers unique endings for different crew combinations. The second loop wraps with all pilot duos delivering speech sequences and the last pair in the loop reveals a cheat code. Originally released in 1992 the game maintains a cult following for its branching scenarios and co op flexibility.
