You play as a child trapped in a dream world that mirrors reality but hides a dark secret. The game lets you explore every corner of this eerie duplicate, searching homes and interacting with characters to uncover their private struggles or simply watch their lives unfold. Your actions in the dream world slowly bleed into the real one creating a tangled web of cause and effect. Choices often involve deciding when to intervene using stealth or force though the story suggests not every problem needs a violent solution. The game stands out for its slow pacing and emphasis on quiet discovery. Players can spend hours digging into side characters' backstories or focusing on the main mystery. While the minimalist graphics and lack of traditional combat might not appeal to everyone early reviews highlight its atmospheric tension and the way small decisions create unexpected consequences. The Game Boy version in particular has drawn praise for making a contemplative game feel surprisingly at home on a handheld.
AF+ER is the story of a child finding himself in a dreamworld, on that is a perfect reflection of the real one, but with a grim secret. And somehow these two worlds become almost seamlessly intertwined. AF+ER is really about taking your time, exploring, and realizing choices you make may have rippling effects. In the dreamworld, you can search every nook of every house, and learn every NPCs darkest secrets, or merely get a voyeuristic insight into their life and motivation. Also keep in mind that sometimes the best decision is not choosing violence, but hey, sometimes violence makes for less resistance on your way.
