About

Agalta is a role-playing game developed by Fenrir and released in 1993. It plays on the PC-9800 Series and follows Ares, a young warrior who investigates a string of disappearances near his home. Players guide Ares into a cave rumored to hold dark forces, battling enemies through a hybrid combat system that layers real-time action over turn-based strategy. Decisions matter in both exploration and battle, with character progression and resource management shaping the journey. The game’s combat stands out for blending timing and planning, offering a pace that feels more reactive than most RPGs of its era. Though it sticks to standard JRPG tropes like party-based progression and dungeon crawling, the added urgency of real-time elements creates a distinct rhythm. Little modern attention has been paid to Agalta, but its approach to battle mechanics hints at trends that would later define broader genre shifts.
