Build and command empires in this classic real-time strategy game reborn for modern PCs. Guide civilizations from primitive hunter-gatherers to Iron Age dominance by managing resources, training units, and conquering foes. Each of 12 factions offers distinct units, tech trees, and playstyles. Progress through four historical eras by upgrading your Town Center, unlocking new tools for warfare and economics. Balance expansion with resource scarcity, cut too many trees and you’ll pay the price. Singleplayer campaigns span 40+ hours with revised narration, while online modes let you battle or team up with up to seven players. The Definitive Edition polishes decades of content with 4K visuals, refined animations, and streamlined controls. Community favorites include the scenario builder for custom maps and mods that add fresh mechanics. Despite a steep learning curve, its blend of tactical depth and historical themes keeps players engaged. Over 1 million copies sold since 2018 show its enduring appeal. For those craving complex strategy with a focus on long-term planning, this remains a top-tier choice.
Age of Empires requires the player to develop a civilization from a handful of hunter-gatherers to an expansive Iron Age empire. To ensure victory, the player must gather resources in order to pay for new units, buildings and more advanced technologies. Resources must also be preserved, as no new resources become available as the game progresses, meaning if you cut a tree down, the tree will not grow back. Twelve civilizations are available, each with individual sets of attributes, including a varying number of available technologies and units. Each civilization has technologies unique to them, so that no civilization possesses all the technologies possible within the game. A major component of the game is the advancement through four ages. These are the Stone Age (Mesolithic/Paleolithic), Tool Age (Neolithic/Chalcolithic), Bronze Age and Iron Age. Advancement between ages is researched at the Town Center and each advancement brings the player new technologies, weapons, and units.
