Relic Entertainment developed this title while Xbox Game Studios handled the publishing duties for its October 2021 launch on PC. It is a real-time strategy game that returns players to historical conflicts rather than fantasy settings. You command armies from different eras across maps inspired by actual world events. The visuals run in high definition on modern systems. This entry focuses on bringing back classic base building and combat mechanics while updating the presentation for current hardware standards. Players choose between single player campaigns or competitive online matches against others worldwide.
You start by gathering resources like wood and food to build a village that eventually grows into a military powerhouse. The interface lets you issue commands to groups of units instantly. Battles happen in real time so you must react fast to enemy flanks or siege engines. Each civilization offers unique buildings and bonuses that change how you approach an engagement. Campaigns guide you through specific historical moments with scripted events. Multiplayer modes test your ability to manage economy while maintaining a steady army production line. Sessions often last an hour as you scout the map and decide when to push for victory or fortify your position against attacks.
The PlayPile data shows mixed feelings from players who have rated this title on IGDB with an average score of 76.9 out of 100 based on 122 ratings. Most users spend around 45 hours in the campaign mode before moving to multiplayer sessions. Community moods fluctuate between frustration during long matches and excitement when executing a perfect counter attack. Review snippets frequently mention the visual quality as a strong point while others criticize the pathfinding AI. Average playtime for those who finish the main story sits near 30 hours. Many users note that competitive lobbies remain active even two years after release.
This game works best for people who want deep strategy without fantasy elements. The current cheapest price is $12.49 on Green Man Gaming which makes it a solid buy if you missed the launch window. There are no major achievements to chase that force completion, so you can play at your own pace. It feels polished compared to older entries but lacks some of the chaotic fun found in predecessors. You should grab this version only if you have patience for learning complex unit counters and economic management over the next few months.

age of empires iv is my favorite kind of video game: the kind that has me pausing the video game to look up the history of the domestication of horses

Continuing my interest with strategy game UX on controller by looking at the just released Age of Empires IV on Xbox. Pretty interesting, makes some notable improvements on the AoE2 port. Continue to love the automatic villager management options. Control group and search menus notably upgraded.

Circumstance has arranged my gaming backlogs so that I'm playing Age of Empires IV and Advance Wars 2 simultaneously. they're different enough that I want to see them through, but I predict a hard break on "moving soldiers around" as a game mechanic coming up soon for me.
