About

Akira is a cancelled action title that tried to mix racing, shooting, and platforming into one package. Players control Tetsuo as he tears through Neo Tokyo in a high speed run against the clock. The game was supposed to let you switch between driving fast bikes on city streets and fighting enemies on foot during specific segments. Black Pearl Software built this for the Sega Mega Drive and Sega CD before THQ pulled the plug in 1994. You never got to see if the final version would have handled the physics well or if the combat felt smooth enough. This project stands out mostly because it existed at all given how hard it was to adapt such a complex story. Most fans know Akira as an anime movie, so seeing a video game attempt to capture that energy is rare. The cancellation left many questions about what the developers planned for the different console versions they listed. There are no community ratings since nobody actually played the finished product, but screenshots from early builds show some interesting design ideas. It remains a curious piece of gaming history that never reached a shelf near you.
