"It takes a good deal of recklessness to develop a video game similar in every respect to Ratchet & Clank, knowing what kind of production you're up against. Akimbot, without mincing words, comes out in pieces; not because it's not funny, but because of the compulsive desire to be a clone of the masterpiece Insomniac. Ironically, the most interesting sections are those with their own character, without wanting at all costs to include citations of other people's intellectual property. A real shame, because technically it is well made and offers a good level of challenge, but it is penalized by the merciless comparison."

About

Akira is a high-octane arcade racer set in the neon-drenched chaos of Neo-Tokyo. You take control of Keneda or Tetsuo, zipping through destructible environments on customized motorcycles while dodging obstacles and rival gang members. The game blends fast-paced racing with chaotic combat as you battle the Clowns and navigate the city’s tunnels. Psionic energy blasts, flying bikes, and explosive set pieces keep the action relentless. The 1994 Amiga release captures the movie’s frenetic energy with pixelated flair. This cult classic stands out for its aggressive gameplay and visual style. Sharp sprite work and a synth-heavy soundtrack evoke the dystopian vibe of the source material. While the single-player campaign leans heavily into the movie’s plot, the focus remains on tight controls and mayhem. With a cult following among retro arcade fans, Akira remains a relic of 90s Amiga gaming. Its chaotic charm and speed-focused gameplay earned it a 7.5/10 on Amiga FAQ, praised for delivering the movie’s spirit in a playable format.
