Al Qadim: The Genie's Curse is a 1994 PC RPG that mixes dungeon crawling with Arabian folklore. You control a single combat-focused character navigating a top-down world, hacking through enemies with semi-realtime swordplay. Leveling up unlocks three customizable combat moves, taught by trainers scattered across the map. The game layers AD&D 2e mechanics with quirky Middle Eastern twists, spells feel sharper, creatures wear exotic designs, and battles pop with colorful chaos. Exploration leans into port cities and cursed islands, balancing loot hunting with Sinbar’s gruff mentorship. The hook is its wild setting: pirates, genies, and caliphs collide in a plot about winning a political marriage through sheer brutality. Combat stays engaging with its move-tree system, and the bestiary mixes familiar foes with desert-themed quirks. Though dated by today’s standards, its blend of crunchy stats and playful worldbuilding carved a niche. Linux and Mac players can still dust this off for a retro fix.
