Alpha Roid mixes space shooter action with surprisingly gritty hand to hand combat. You guide a lone pilot through waves of alien threats in a straightforward shooter format until your weapons deplete. At that point the game switches to a close quarters brawl where you punch and dodge to reclaim lost firepower. Each victory grants new armaments for the next wave of shooting challenges. The back and forth structure keeps tension high even as systems remain basic. What sets it apart is the unexpected shift from gunplay to fistfights a bold choice for its era. Developer Opera House worked within MSX hardware limits to create a rhythm that feels intentional rather than gimmicky. While not widely remembered today the game remains a curious artifact of 80s arcade experimentation. Niche but effective for players who enjoy abrupt genre mashups.
