Amagon is a 1988 platform shooter where you play a stranded marine (or a scientist in Japan) navigating a tropical island to reach a rescue ship. The gameplay blends side-scrolling platforming with shootouts against enemies, ending in a showdown with a boss inspired by the Flatwoods Monster, a real-life cryptid. Controls feel dated by modern standards, and the level design leans into the technical limits of the NES era. Critics largely overlooked it at launch, and modern reviews often cite its charmless execution and clunky mechanics. The Japanese version’s sci-fi twist, where the hero injects himself with a drug to power up, adds a minor oddity, though most players stuck with the Western marine-centric story. Despite its low profile, the game’s niche presentation and retro difficulty curve have quietly gained a following among platformer purists.
Players take the role of Amagon, who is a Marine trappd on an island as a result of a plane crash. The player must guide Amagon through the island to reach the rescue ship, defeating a number of foes-including the final boss, which is based on the "Flatwoods Monster", a rumoured space alien residing in Flatwoods, West Virginia. The original Japanese version departs from the above in that the main character is not a marine, but is instead a scientist named "Jackson" who transforms himself into his Macho-Man form using a special drug.
