About

Amazing Sonic is a 1994 handheld game from Tomy that tasks players with guiding Sonic through 12 maze-like levels to disable a robot factory. You maneuver through each stage to retrieve Chaos Emeralds while avoiding obstacles and enemies. The controls require precise directional input split into two separate sections on the device. Gameplay relies on quick reflexes and memorizing level layouts to outpace the timer. The game’s design leans into its hardware quirks. A pop-up lid reveals the screen which glows only when exposed to bright light. The split directional pad makes movement awkward without instructions. Despite these challenges, the 12 levels offer a consistent challenge that some retro fans have called a relic of early portable gaming. The physical quirks and dated visuals make it more of a novelty for collectors than a modern play session.
