Among the Sleep dropped in May 2014 as an indie horror adventure from Krillbite Studio. You play as a two-year-old toddler navigating a terrifying world after a family argument disrupts your birthday. The game avoids traditional combat, forcing you to rely on hiding and running while interacting with a sentient teddy bear named Teddy. It launches across PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Linux, and Mac platforms. This title redefines horror by shrinking the player down to a vulnerable child who cannot fight back against the monsters lurking in the dark corners of a house. The perspective stays strictly first person to sell the feeling of smallness and fear without any weapons or health bars to protect you from the unknown forces threatening your family.
A typical session involves crawling, stumbling, and hiding under furniture as you explore a house that feels huge and dangerous. You interact with objects by simply reaching out, but your movements are clumsy since you are a toddler trying to make sense of the environment. The core loop requires you to find Teddy after he gets snatched from your crib, leading you through laundry rooms and dark closets filled with hanging coats. There are no combat mechanics or shooting skills to unlock. Instead, you solve simple puzzles like opening doors or moving obstacles while avoiding unseen entities that chase you down hallways. The controls feel intentionally awkward to simulate a young child's motor skills. You spend most of your time holding Teddy tight for protection when the screen blurs from fear, and you must navigate dark spaces by listening for sounds rather than seeing clearly in low light conditions.
The PlayPile community has rated Among the Sleep with an IGDB score of 67.7 out of 100 based on one hundred reviews. Users report an average playtime of roughly four hours, which aligns with the game's linear narrative structure. The dominant mood in discussions remains "uneasy" and "melancholic," reflecting the story's heavy themes rather than jump scares. Critics often praise the atmosphere but note the short length as a drawback for some players. Review snippets frequently mention the unique perspective as both brilliant and frustrating due to the clunky movement mechanics. Completion rates hover around eighty percent, suggesting that while many start the game, a significant number stop before reaching the end because the horror elements feel too oppressive rather than fun.
This experience is best suited for players who want a short, narrative-driven scare without the need for complex skill trees or long playtimes. The price point makes it a reasonable impulse buy if you can stomach the slow pacing and frustrating controls. You earn seven achievements during your run, mostly tied to finding collectibles or surviving specific chapters. I do not recommend this title if you expect traditional action or a fast-paced horror game. The emotional weight of the story lands well for those who enjoy sad tales, but the lack of combat might feel empty to others. Buy it only if you want a two-hour trip into a child's nightmare and do not mind stumbling through dark rooms without any weapons to defend yourself.
The story begins as a toddler is having his birthday celebration at home with his mother. The celebration is interrupted by a visitor at the front door who is hidden from the player, but the story suggests it is the player's father, with whom the mother has divorced. The conversation is muffled and partly kept from the player as the mother raises her voice, refusing the father's request to see his son. The mother's angry tone frightens the toddler, whose fear is presented as blurred vision. Quickly, the mother returns with a gift, but the mother doesn't tell who the gift is from. Instead, she carries the child and gift upstairs to his room, a place of bright, warm colors and streaming sunlight. Before the present is opened, the telephone rings, and the mother leaves her son in his bedroom to play alone. The gift is revealed to be a sentient teddy bear. The bear introduces himself as Teddy. Teddy has a friendly, curious nature. After a few minutes playing together, they go into the closet, which turns out to be a large, dark room filled with long, black coats. Teddy says that if the boy gets scared in the dark, he can hug Teddy to feel more safe. The small adventure is ended by the mother finding them; she tells the child, gently, to "stop hiding from mommy" and puts him to bed. The boy wakes in the night to find Teddy being taken by an unseen force. His crib becomes overturned, and the player escapes. He leaves the bedroom and rescues Teddy from a washing machine. The bear grunts that 'something is not right', and that they need to find mother.
