Amplitude is a rhythm action game where you blast away colored gems in sync with music. Each track is split into sections, drums, bass, vocals, synths, that form a winding path. You destroy the gems in these lanes to rebuild the original song, hitting precise timing windows. The game’s sci-fi story about a brain-hacking project adds a vague, trippy backdrop to the flashy visuals. Gameplay is simple to grasp but tough to perfect, with leaderboards tracking your progress. The soundtrack features original tracks by Harmonix collaborators like Freezepop and Danny B, designed for optimal beat-matching. The reboot respects the 2003 original’s legacy while modernizing its look and flow. Up to four players can compete locally, using power-ups to disrupt opponents during chaotic matches. With a 78% Metacritic score and a cult following for its controller-based chaos, Amplitude lives up to its name, loud, fast, and packed with energy.
In 2112, Nanotechnologists at the Applied Meta-Prionics Limbic Tuning Department will create organic machines that can be inserted into the human brain to access both the physical and metaphysical secrets within. In an attempt to induce synesthesia, a “gift” that one of the technologists has, Mari programs a new batch of bots to enter her mind and unlock this enhanced visual/aural perception. This deluge of imagery and sound is overwhelming and unfortunately, Mari’s brain shuts down. You will use the AMPLITUDE Operating System to enter Mari’s memories, senses and emotions. There you will blast away the protective scarification that her brain has created around these synesthetic senses and bring her back to life.
