Angelus: Akuma no Fukuin is a 1988 visual novel from Enix that leans into its genre's roots. Players navigate a static scene by selecting commands like "Look" or "Talk," each with branching sub-menus that change based on the location. Progress isn't about solving puzzles, it's about triggering key conversations or events to push the story forward. The plot tracks journalist Brian Pall and his partner Eris as they investigate a rare illness causing green skin and facial disfigurement in random victims across Peru, Japan, and a flight to London. Their search leads them to a shadowy religious cult tied to the outbreaks. What sets this apart is its deliberate pacing and dialogue-driven design. Unlike modern visual novels, it avoids branching narratives; choices feel more like guided exploration than decision-making. The FM Towns and PC-9800 origins give it a retro aesthetic, but the core experience remains rooted in classic adventure game logic. Though buried under decades of releases, it holds a quiet niche for fans of early narrative experiments.
A business man in Peru and a girl visiting Japan both suddenly fall victim to a strange disease that turns the skin green and partially disfigures the face. The most unusual thing is that these two incidents occurred at the same time. Brian Pall, a journalist from the London Post, was on a flight to London when suddenly one of the passengers is struck with the same disease. These series of outbreaks have lead Brian and his partner, Eris Miler, to start their own investigation. Their discoveries eventually lead them going up against a mysterious religious group.
