Arcanum launched in August 2001 as a single-player RPG from Troika Games, a studio formed by ex-Fallout veterans Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky. Set on a PC-only platform, this title drops you into a world where steam engines and magic clash without an easy peace. You play a survivor of a zeppelin crash who must navigate a society where factories sit beside ancient castle keeps. Humans, elves, dwarves, and orcs all coexist here, yet their relationship is tense because industrial progress threatens the old magical order. The story kicks off with your character surviving a terrorist attack by half-ogre bandits while carrying a mysterious silver ring that sets the plot in motion.
You spend most of your time managing stats and making dialogue choices that define your path through the game world. You can build a character who relies on guns, spells, or a mix of both to solve problems. Combat feels tactical because you must decide between using a flintlock pistol or casting a fireball depending on your equipment and enemy defenses. The game supports multiplayer and cooperative modes, though the single-player campaign is where the real depth lies. You explore cities filled with factories and sewers, talk to NPCs about their grievances, and complete quests that often have multiple solutions. Your actions change how factions view you and which doors open or stay locked in this industrial fantasy setting.
Players on PlayPile rate Arcanum highly with an IGDB score of 89.3 based on 128 ratings and a Metacritic score of 81. The community moods show strong appreciation for the writing and world design, though some users note the controls feel dated by modern standards. Average playtime sits around 45 hours for a standard run, while completionists who chase every achievement often spend over 70 hours. Review snippets frequently mention the unique magic versus technology system as a standout feature that keeps people coming back. The community values the game's depth and often cites it as a classic that deserves more recognition than it gets today.
This is a dense RPG that demands patience but offers incredible reward for those who enjoy reading dialogue and managing complex systems. At $20 on most digital stores, the price feels fair given the 45+ hour playtime and the number of achievements available. You should play this if you want to make decisions that genuinely alter the story rather than just pick one of three generic options. The multiplayer co-op mode adds a nice layer for friends but does not replace the strength of the solo experience. Skip it only if you need fast-paced action without thinking, because this game expects you to plan every move carefully.
Arcanum begins with a cut scene of the IFS Zephyr, a luxury zeppelin, on her maiden voyage from Caladon to Tarant. Two monoplanes, piloted by Half-Ogre bandits, close in on the craft and commence attack runs, succeeding in shooting it down. An old gnome who is a passenger aboard the Zephyr is now in his death throes under charred debris and tells the player to bring a silver ring to "the boy," and promptly dies. Being the only survivor of the crash, the main character is proclaimed as "The Living One," a holy reincarnate, by the only witness to the crash, Virgil. The story follows the player's path as he searches for the origin of the ring.
