Armies of Exigo is a real-time strategy game from Black Hole Entertainment published by Electronic Arts in 2004. You build bases, manage resources, and lead armies across 3D maps while preparing for attacks from above and below. The game introduces an underground layer where enemies can tunnel in, forcing you to split defenses and track threats in multiple dimensions. This adds tension to base layout and combat decisions as you constantly adjust to unexpected flanking maneuvers. The underground combat mechanic remains its defining trait, creating a strategic layer rarely seen in RTS games. While not a commercial standout at release, its creative approach to multi-level warfare has kept it in the memory of strategy enthusiasts. With single-player missions and competitive multiplayer, it offers a focused challenge that rewards adaptability. The 2004 PC version shows its age but retains a core of thoughtful design that still feels fresh in certain moments.
