Arnold Palmer Tournament Golf lets you swing your way through solo challenges and competitive matches on a variety of platforms from the late '80s. Choose between club types before teeing off, then navigate through practice sessions, head-to-head matches, or a full 18-hole tournament against 15 opponents. The main event spans 12 rounds mixing stroke and match play, with sudden death playoffs added for tiebreakers. Progress unlocks better gear and caddie support, and passwords let you track your tournament run across sessions. The game stands out for its structured progression and blend of modes, offering both casual play and long-term goals. Its tournament format with shifting rules keeps the pace varied, though the pixelated golf swings and simple physics feel dated by today’s standards. Released across arcade cabinets and home systems, it captured golf’s competitive spirit for an era before motion controls or 3D courses. The password system and multiple difficulty levels added replay value, making it a solid early example of sports simulation.
Tournament play lasts 12 rounds, 18 holes of golf each. Most rounds are standard "stroke" play but the seventh and eighth rounds are "match" games. Things really get serious when match game ends in a tie, and players move into a sudden death play-off. During the tournament players earn higher skill levels, more knowledgeable caddies, and more power. You'll earn a password at the end of each round of the tournament.
