Arrow Flash is a side-scrolling shooter where you pilot a spacecraft battling alien threats across space. The game lets you switch between two forms, a fast spaceship and a armored robot, each with distinct weapons and abilities. The spaceship wields lasers for heavy fire, while the robot can deploy a shield that destroys anything on contact. Charging a special move called Arrow Flash lets you unleash devastating attacks, either by holding a button or collecting icons mid-level. Every stage ends with a boss fight as you navigate waves of enemies, adjusting your strategy depending on which form you use. The ability to swap between modes mid-combat sets Arrow Flash apart from its peers, encouraging players to mix offense and defense creatively. Though rarely discussed in modern retrospectives, it holds a niche reputation among Mega Drive shooter fans for its dual-play approach and straightforward action. The split narratives between regions add minor variety, but it’s the quick-form switching and charged attacks that keep players engaged. With 11 stages and bosses designed for repeated attempts, it leans into the arcade challenge formula of the late 80s and early 90s.
In the US version, players take control of Zana Keene, a pilot for United Government Space Force, and attempt to stop viking terrorists led by Great Hilagi using a transformable mecha-space fighter named the ERX-75 "Chameleon," developed by Zana's grand father Zerrek Keene. In the European version, players take control of Anna Schwinn, a pilot for United Government Space Force, and attempt to stop powerful alien empire named Zorgon V using a transformable mecha-space fighter named Arrow Flash, developed by Anna's father Herbert Schwinn.
