About

Artillery is a turn-based shooter where two players battle to destroy each other's forces using artillery fire. Each side starts with 100 troops positioned on a destructible battlefield. Players take turns inputting shot angles and velocity values while considering wind conditions. Explosions immediately kill nearby troops and can crater the terrain, creating obstacles or hazards. After each turn one soldier from each side vanishes, deserting under pressure. Victory comes when all enemy troops are destroyed in a back-and-forth duel of precision and strategy. This IBM DOS title from 1982 introduced physics-based mechanics like destructible landscapes and wind-adjusted trajectories. The gradual troop attrition adds tension as both sides weaken over time. Early examples of its genre, it emphasizes careful calculation over reflexes. Its simplistic text-based interface hides surprisingly layered tactics. The 30 year gap between release and modern artillery games shows how durable its core loop remains.
