Assault is a straight-up shoot-em-up for the Atari 2600 where you battle waves of descending aliens. You control a ship that moves left or right with the joystick, and fire by pushing up. Holding the button lets you aim left or right while firing. Enemies drop projectiles, fireballs, or split into smaller threats as the rounds progress. Every shot you take builds up heat, track it with the green bar in the corner before your system melts down. Lose all your lives or hit 999,999 points to end the game, with extra lives awarded every 10,000 points. This 1983 title stands out for its simple but tricky control setup and pressure of overheating. Players have to balance firepower with survival, a loop that feels raw and mechanical. While not the most graphically advanced, it carves out a niche for fans of no-frills arcade action. The score-chasing mechanic keeps it replayable but brutally short, most runs top out before the six-digit limit.
