About

Assault: Retribution drops you into a neon-soaked future where two soldiers battle through seven levels loaded with explosions and power-ups. Play as Washington or Doyle, each with distinct weapons and paths to navigate. Use analog controls to zip across environments while picking up health packs, shields, and smart bombs. The game’s straightforward mission is to blow things up efficiently, with save points letting you pause the carnage whenever needed. Weapon variety keeps things fresh, think pulse rifles, homing missiles, and magnetic bolt launchers, while memory card support adds a layer of persistence to your progress. This 1998 shooter stands out for its two-player co-op mode, a rarity at the time that lets friends join the chaos. While the polygonal visuals and basic level design feel dated, the emphasis on fast-paced combat and customization options holds up. With 87% of user reviews noting the fun of teaming up and the satisfaction of upgrading gear, it’s a blast from the past for those who miss the era’s raw, unpolished action. The game’s direct approach and willingness to let players customize their killing style make it a nostalgic pick for retro fans.

Storyline

Assault: Retribution supplies you with some of the best firepower modern technology can provide, as well as various customization options to ensure "better living through quick death disbursement." Washington utilizes a barrage of destructive weaponry such as the P-420 Multi-Phase Pulse Rifle and the aptly named Cutter; Doyle uses a variety of Homing Missiles, Beam Lasers, and the D-16 Magnetic Bolt Accelerator. There's also a plethora of pickups including weapon upgrades, health, ammunition recharges, smart bombs, extra lives, and shields. Save points within each level let you resume the killing when it is most convenient for you. And (rare as of 1999), there is a two-player cooperative mode in case you feel that one ultimate killing machine just isn't enough.
