Asteroid is a fast-paced arcade shooter where you pilot a spaceship through a field of incoming space rocks. The objective is simple: destroy as many asteroids as possible before they crash into you. Each shot breaks rocks into smaller fragments, increasing the challenge as the screen fills with debris. Players use thrust and rotation to dodge hazards while conserving limited firepower. The game tracks your score based on how many rocks you eliminate before a collision ends the run. Simple controls and escalating difficulty make it easy to pick up but hard to master. Released in 1973, Asteroid arrived just two years after Pong and helped solidify Atari’s early dominance in arcade gaming. Its vector graphics and responsive mechanics set a template for future space shooters, though it lacked the color and complexity of later titles. Community archives note it as a key title in Midway’s early catalog, often overshadowed by its more famous sequel Space Race, a near-identical follow-up Atari released independently.
