Astra Superstars is a fast paced 2D fighting game where battles play out entirely in mid air. Players choose champions from a magical kingdom and clash in three round matches using basic strikes special moves and explosive super attacks. Each fighter has unique abilities that let them zip across the screen while dodging and countering opponents. The goal is to earn the chance to take down the main villain Satan Volte in a series of escalating showdowns. The game stands out for its emphasis on aerial combat which was uncommon in 90s fighters. Special moves require precise button combinations making each match feel like a dance of timing and strategy. Developed by Santa Claus and published by SUNSOFT it ran on arcade boards and Sega Saturn with modes for solo play or head to head. While its 1998 release date means it’s largely forgotten its floaty fight mechanics and over the top magic themed moveset still feel distinct among retro brawlers.
