Astro Fighter is a 1979 arcade shooter developed by Data East and published by Sega. Players control a ship destroying enemy aircraft through four increasingly difficult rounds, each followed by a refueling stage. Dodging missiles and bombs while clearing all targets is key, with refueling requiring a shot at the 'GS' ship to continue. The game cycles through these stages, ramping up difficulty each pass. Starting with three lives, players gain a bonus life at 5000 points, but survival in later waves demands sharp reflexes and timing. Scoring rewards precision over brute force. Each of the six falling bombs nets 300 points, while hitting the GS ship cleanly adds 950. The game’s largest bonus, 10,000 points, comes from finishing four waves with exactly two extra shots beyond the minimum required. This exploit became a top-score staple due to the near-impossible difficulty of later stages. With players needing both skill and strategy to stay alive, Astro Fighter’s tight mechanics and exploitable scoring loop made it a standout in early 80s arcades.
