Avalon Code is a role-playing game built around the Nintendo DS's touch screen. Players use the lower screen's Book of Prophecy to perform Code Scans by striking objects or enemies with the B button, recording details about them. The story follows a peasant haunted by visions of a world trapped in cycles of destruction and rebirth. You decide which characters, creatures, and items get carried forward to the next cycle by scanning them as either worthy or not. The game's use of the DS's hardware feels fresh. Scanning enemies or items with a tap adds a tactile layer to exploration. The narrative leans into heavy themes like judgment and reincarnation without taking itself too seriously. Though it launched in 2008, the system's blend of physical interaction and mythic storytelling still sets it apart from other handheld RPGs of the era.
