Avengers is a vertically scrolling beat 'em up from 1986 that puts you in a neon-soaked city battling hordes of baddies. You control Ryu or Ko, fighting through five stages to stop the villain Geshita from kidnapping six women. Gameplay revolves around timed button presses for punches, kicks, and a spinning 360-degree roundhouse kick. Two players can team up to split screens and share the carnage. Each level overflows with enemies, from gangsters to hulking brutes, all met with a mix of hand-to-hand combat and environmental attacks like breaking crates to drop on foes. What sticks is the tight combo system and clever power-ups like grenades and speed boosts that let you turn the tide. Hidden rooms behind destructible walls reward explorers with extra health and weapons like nunchaku. Though short by modern standards, its pacing and co-op design laid groundwork for later brawlers. Regulars on retro arcade lists, it’s often cited as a key influence on Street Fighter’s co-op modes.
