About Back 4 Blood

Back 4 Blood launched on October 12, 2021 as a cooperative first-person shooter developed by Turtle Rock Studios. It serves as the spiritual successor to their hit Left 4 Dead series. You play as one of eight immune survivors called Cleaners fighting a parasite-infected horde known as the Ridden. The game released across PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Players can tackle the story campaign alone or join up to three others online. A competitive PvP mode lets you switch sides to play as either a Cleaner or the infected creatures. This title brings a fresh twist to the zombie survival genre with its dynamic card system that reshuffles objectives every match.

Gameplay

Sessions revolve around moving through linear levels while dispatching waves of Ridden using an arsenal of firearms and melee weapons. You select a specific Cleaner class with unique perks before dropping into missions where the difficulty adjusts in real time via the Game Director. The core loop involves clearing rooms, protecting objectives, and managing limited health packs. A major mechanic is the Card System which lets you build custom decks to alter enemy behavior or grant buffs during gameplay. Matches feel chaotic since mutated bosses can reach twenty feet tall. You must communicate constantly to cover angles or revive downed teammates. Progression unlocks new cards and gear but does not carry over permanently between runs in most modes, keeping each session fresh.

What Players Think

The PlayPile community views this title with moderate enthusiasm despite mixed critical reception. Metacritic sits at 76 while IGDB lists a 73 average based on 124 ratings. Players log an average playtime that reflects the campaign length plus extra grinding for cards. Completion rates vary significantly since the rarest achievement "Act 6 Ace" has only a 1.40 percent unlock rate. Most players find the 93 total achievements manageable but time-consuming. Community moods lean positive when playing with friends in co-op but dip during solo runs due to difficulty spikes. Review snippets often praise the gunplay while criticizing some of the microtransaction elements. The average achievement unlock rate sits at 24.9 percent, suggesting many users stop before tackling the hardest content.

PlayPile's Take

This game is worth your time if you want a solid zombie shooter with friends and don't mind paying full price for the base version. Current deals show it drops to $5.00 on GameBillet, which makes the 93 achievements much more appealing for completionists. The card system adds genuine variety but can feel overwhelming for newcomers. We recommend this if you have a dedicated squad willing to experiment with different builds against mutating foes. Avoid it if you prefer story-heavy experiences or hate competitive pressure in your co-op sessions. The low price point on historical sales makes the investment safe even if the campaign feels repetitive after twenty hours.

Storyline

Fight your way through a dynamic, perilous world in a 4-player co-op story campaign where you must work together to survive increasingly challenging missions. Play with up to 3 of your friends online or go solo and lead your team in battle. Choose from 8 customizable Cleaners, one of the immune survivors, and a range of lethal weapons and items. Strategise against an ever-evolving enemy bent on your total destruction. Play with or against friends in PVP. Switch between playing as a Cleaner with special perks and the horrific Ridden. Both sides come with unique weapons, abilities, and specialties. A new "rogue-lite" Card System creates different experiences each and every time, putting you in control to craft custom decks, roll different builds and undertake more demanding fights. The Game Director is constantly adjusting to player actions, ensuring exciting fights, extreme gameplay diversity, and tougher legions of Ridden - including mutated boss types up to 20 feet tall.
