Bad Apple Wars is a visual novel that mixes romance with schoolyard rebellion. You play as Rinka, a high school student who dies after a clumsy accident and wakes up at NEVAEH Academy, a mysterious afterlife school where students wear masks and follow strict rules. The faculty includes a cryptic teacher known as Mr Rabbit, who guides you through a fractured system ruled by two factions. One side enforces the academy’s rigid order, while the other rebels against it. Your decisions determine which group you support, shaping relationships, conflicts, and the story’s outcome through branching paths and multiple endings. The game stands out for its dramatic twists and high-stakes moral choices. With over 20 possible endings reported by players, each route explores different angles of loyalty, love, and defiance. Otomate’s signature art style and character designs add to the school’s eerie yet stylized vibe. Though dated on PlayStation Vita, its tightly written scenarios and faction-driven conflicts keep the narrative engaging for fans of choice-heavy stories. The clash between order and rebellion offers fresh depth to the otome genre, balancing romance with a dark, philosophical edge.
The game follows Rinka, who, on her way to her first day of high school, is struck and killed at a crosswalk by a passing car while stopping to grab her shoe that falls off her foot. After death, she is greeted by Mr. Rabbit (a teacher with a rabbit mask) in the afterlife in front of NEVAEH Academy, a purgatory-esque setting for deceased students with strict rules including masked headgear for all faculty and students. A teacher at the school, Mr. Rabbit brings her to the academy's opening ceremony, which is attacked by the 'Bad Apples,' a group of students who oppose the strict authoritative nature that the schools runs on. Players are given the choice to side with bad apples or good apples (those who abide by the rules of the school administration, including the student prefects which enforce them), with each pathway involving unique branching paths and multiple endings which are dependent on choices made by the player during their playthrough.
