Banjo X started as an ambitious update to the classic platformer Banjo-Kazooie back in 2005. Rare intended this project for the Xbox 360 to push the series into a new era with better graphics and mechanics. Players would have guided the bear and his bird friend through massive 3D worlds filled with puzzles and collectibles. The game was meant to keep the single player adventure intact while modernizing the core loop that made the original so beloved. Development took a hard turn when the project got scrapped in 2006. Instead of releasing Banjo X, the team pivoted hard toward vehicles, which birthed Nuts & Bolts later on. This cancellation remains a notable piece of gaming history for fans tracking Rare's evolution. While no gameplay footage exists to judge its final state, the mere existence of this prototype shows how close the studio came to changing the franchise direction years before the vehicle-focused sequel arrived.
