Barbarian casts you as Hegor, a warrior navigating the treacherous landscape of Durgan to stop the evil Necron. Using a mouse joystick keyboard or all three you guide Hegor through marshes temples and underground volcanoes. Each action shifts based on context, what works in one spot fails elsewhere. Your goal is to find and destroy a crystal fueling Necron’s power. But time is short: melting the crystal triggers a volcanic eruption forcing you back to the surface before everything explodes. Launched in 1987 this single player title ran on DOS Amiga Atari ST and a dozen other systems. Its mix of platforming combat and puzzle solving stood out for its era. Players praised the tight controls and clever use of environment based mechanics. Though over 35 years old it still shows how small teams could craft tense action adventures with clever design. The volcano’s countdown adds urgency that modern remakes often miss.
