"At the end of the day, Barbearian isn’t too hard to figure out. It’s a slightly above-average, bite-size hack-and-slash game with a charm that feels incredibly Flash-esque. It’s not on my list of top contenders or anything, but it’s not something that I’d steer people clear of, either. If you’re looking for something fun, fast, mindless, and relatively inexpensive, there are definitely way worse things that you could play than Barbearian."

About

Barbarian is a side-scrolling platformer that channels the visual and structural DNA of classic 90s arcade games. You control a hulking warrior navigating levels filled with traps, enemies, and collectibles while progressing through a straightforward but repetitive campaign. The controls are tight for a DOS-era title, emphasizing precise jumps and timed attacks. Each stage ends with a boss fight, though the difficulty often leans more on frustration than fair challenge. The game is best known for its bizarre animated cutscenes between levels. These pre-rendered clips feature the protagonist in low-budget, awkwardly acted scenarios that feel like a demo reel for a forgotten 90s action movie. While the technical ambition was ahead of its time, the execution hasn’t aged well. Still, it’s a curious relic of mid-90s PC gaming, with a cult following that occasionally surfaces in retro forums. Released in 1996, it runs on original DOS hardware but is more of a historical footnote than a must-play.
