Barbarian II is a sequel that throws you into pixelated chaos as Hegor, a loincloth-wearing hero battling the vengeful Necron. You’ll trudge through six levels of forests, dungeons, and temples, smacking everything that moves with swords, clubs, or whatever blunt object you can grab. Combat is straightforward but frenetic, mixing button-mashing brawls with dodging traps and managing health potions. The game’s charm lies in its over-the-top violence and the sheer absurdity of its low-rez environments, where crumbling castles and cursed caves feel packed with enough enemies to test even the most dedicated pixel slayer. For 1991, the technical polish stands out. It packs 32 on-screen colors and parallax scrolling that gave it a pseudo-3D sheen on Amiga and Atari ST/STE. Over 2,000 frames of sprite animation keep enemies and attacks from feeling repetitive, while the sheer number of weapons and traps adds minor variety. While the controls can feel clunky by modern standards, fans of retro brawler simplicity might appreciate its relentless action. The game didn’t break new ground but delivered exactly what it promised: a loud, messy romp through pixelated ruins.
