Batman: Return of the Joker is a side-scrolling platformer that swaps the cape for a grapple and lets you punch your way through Gotham’s criminal underbelly. Developed by SUNSOFT in 1991, it leans into the comic book version of the Dark Knight rather than any big-screen adaptation. You’ll jump over traps, swing between buildings, and trade fists with Joker’s goons in levels that mix platforming and beat ‘em up action. The story is simple, stop the Joker from causing chaos, but the gameplay is tight and fast. What sets this apart is how it sticks to basics without frills. It doesn’t try to tie into any larger narrative or expand the Batman mythos. Just pure, arcade-style action where you’ll defeat henchmen in each stage before facing off against the Joker. While it lacks the polish of later entries in the genre, fans of 90s platformers might appreciate its no-nonsense approach. The controls are responsive, and the challenge feels fair if you’re used to the era’s design. Short, punchy levels keep things moving even if the visuals haven’t aged as well.
The story begins with the escape of the Joker from an insane asylum. As always, Joker attempts to corrupt Gotham City and put it into chaos. Batman, after defeating a number of different henchmen, must bring Joker to justice.
