Battle Ships turns the classic paper-and-pencil guessing game into a digital showdown. Players arrange fleets on a grid and take turns calling out coordinates to sink each other's ships. Success depends on equal parts planning and luck as you try to outguess your opponent while avoiding their shots. The straightforward mechanics make it easy to jump into but harder to master especially against a human rival who's not bound by pattern. Multiplayer support gives it replay value but you can also test your skills against the AI. It released in 1987 across budget-friendly 8-bit systems like the C64 and Spectrum. Despite its simplicity the game stuck around long enough to earn a cultish reputation among retro strategy fans. Over 30 years later its blend of deduction and randomness still feels satisfyingly timeless.
